This course covers training in Ecdis (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) and is based on the provisions of table A-II/1 and A-II/2 of the STCW Code. It is intended to provide the knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the thorough extent needed to safely navigate vessels whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS. As per mid 2012, ECDIS needs to be applied on ships larger than 3000GT in unlimited sea routes. The ‘old-fashioned’ maps can and will eventually be substituted by electronic navigation maps. The course emphasizes the use of and understanding of ECDIS in various ways (based on subjects from the IMO Model course 1.27). Theoretical material is alternated with practical exercises on the simulator. The course is designed to meet the STCW requirements in the use of ECDIS, as revised by the 2010 Manila Amendments.
