Basic Safety Training


This course (Basic Safety Training or BST) is based on table A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. Seafarers are required to follow a basic safety training which includes personal safety and social responsibility, personal survival techniques, basic firefighting and prevention, and elementary first aid. After following this course the candidate is aware of the hazards of working on a vessel and can respond appropriately in an emergency. Also, the candidate has knowledge of the basic environmental protection procedures and the necessary actions to control fatigue. The candidate is trained in basic in fire prevention and firefighting and elementary first aid.


After taking part in this course, the participant will be competent in the following four subjects of the Basic Safety Training:

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (Model course 1.21 / STCW code A-VI/1-4)
  • Personal Survival Techniques (Model course 1.19 / STCW code A-VI/1-1)
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Model course 1.20 / STCW code A-VI/1-2)
  • Elementary First Aid (Model course 1.13 / STCW code A-VI/1-3)


  • Personal and Group rescue exercises
  • Maintenance on Survival craft and Rescue aids
  • The use of SCABA and Fire extinguishing means
  • Fully equiped fire fighting exercises
  • Emergency procedure exercises
  • First aid and CPR

This course has been certified by ILT and meets the STCW Manila Amendments.

Course information

Target group:
Everyone working on board of a ship should have a valid Basic Safety Certificate.
Conditions for participation:
Swimming diploma (‘s) and an acknowledged Medical examination.
Course duration:
4 consecutive days.
Theoretical part: Bornholmstraat next to nr. 16, 9723 AX Groningen. Practical part: Grindweg 138, 8471 EM Wolvega.

When the exam is passed, the STCW 95 certificate will be handed out and the Seaman’s is signed and stamped.
Validity certificate:
5 years
This course has to be repeated every 5 years.
Bring along:
Seaman’s book, valid passport, overall, workboots, swimming gear and a towel.
Please provide the following documents digitally prior to the start of the course: a copy of a valid passport and a copy of a valid medical examination.
